Noel Ruiz and Ann Nguyen run Homestead Culture in Southern Oregon. Noel’s seed journey began over a decade ago when he left suburban life to spend time on a number of farms and homesteads. Along the way we was gifted seeds and came to realise these seeds held the dreams of a future food forest.

In this episode, Noel and I talk about setting up a homestead and focusing on parttime seedwork. We discuss integrating perennial seed crops amidst annuals and biennials. And we also talk about how seed clubs are a way to support seed libraries.

In the deep dive, Noel and I get into valerian as a seed crop. We explore valerian’s life cycle from seed to root and to seed. Noel explains how frustrating it can be that valerian seed shatters so easily and how to harvest accordingly. And we wrap up with some seed cleaning.

Enjoy the conversation!
